Volunteer for BFBC!
BFBC is a grassroots advocacy organization of people of just like Y-O-U working together to achieve a more bicycle-friendly city. We are nearly all volunteers. (We do have a tiny number of paid positions, albeit underpaid -- but that's beside the point.) Your time, energy, and commitment are even more important than your fiscal contribution.
How to Volunteer
It's easy. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, at volcoord (at) bfbc2 (dot) org or call the BFBC office at 510-549-7433. Please supply:
- Your name, e-mail, phone, and the best time to call you.
- Your availability:
- Frequent: 2 hrs/week
- Steady: 2 hrs/month
- Earn a free membership: only 5 hrs/year
- Other: you decide
- What area(s) you'll volunteer for. We have a huge list of choices - see below.
Or send this information to us with your membership form. Either way, we will try to respond to you as soon as we can. But . . . we aren't perfect; delays have been known to happen :-(. Also, we keep a list of people and their volunteer interests, so that if something comes up at a later time, we know who to ask for help. If you wish to earn a free membership by volunteering, please say so, so that we can keep track of your hours.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
We are always looking for people to help with:
Volunteer Nights
- Typically bimonthly, volunteers meet at BFBC's BCAT office to help out. Socializing and pizza come with the territory. This is an easy way to get involved.
Campaigns
- Bicycle Boulevards
- Bicycle parking
- Bicycle-safety education
- Pavement conditions
- Safe Routes to Schools
- Traffic calming
- Downtown planning
- Southside planning
Member services
- General meetings. Meetings require people to organize them: plan a program, set up, clean up, etc. We would have more general meetings if we had more volunteers to help!
- Minutes-taking. Make info on significant city meetings available to those who can't attend.
- Office help, data entry
- Phone tree
Outreach
- Flyering
- Merchant liaison
- Neighborhood liaison
- Tabling
- Special events
- Valet bicycle parking
Professional skills
- Artwork/Graphics
- Legal
- Macintosh wizard
- Newsletter writing and/or editing
- Small business management
- Web skills
Your own idea
- Other -- what special ideas do you have?
For professional skills, please state your area(s) of expertise. Even though we already have a number of these skills, it would be great to have more people help out and to have gurus to consult with on occasion. We can always use well-written contributions to the newsletter and the web site, whether one-time or ongoing.
